The department of communication at Appalachian State University received a $2,750 scholarship from the Advertising Women of New York Foundation (AWNY), to be awarded to students at the department’s discretion.
Eight colleges and universities, including Appalachian, won the AWNY scholarship. Awardees are selected primarily on the number of students that attend the annual Advertising Career Conference in New York City.
“We were so surprised
but thrilled,” Janice T. Pope, communication department chair said.
“What makes this especially nice is that so many of our endowed
scholarships were hurt by the financial crisis.”
Juniors and seniors
graduating after December who have a minimum GPA of 3.20, both overall
and in their major, are eligible for the scholarship.
Students
must submit a resume and an essay discussing their desire to have a
career in advertising, what they hope to achieve through their career
and what area of advertising they would like to focus on.
Having
past or current membership in the Appalachian advertising club and
knowledge of the advertising business will be factors in deciding which
students receive the scholarship.
“We may
choose one student to receive the entire scholarship, or two students
to split the scholarship,” Roger Bodo, Appalachian advertising club
adviser, said.
The
scholarship application deadline is Sept. 1, which gives the
communication department time to notify AWNY of the recipient(s) chosen
by Sept. 18.
The recipients of the award will be recognized at the annual conference Nov. 13-14.
Bodo
will take a group of students to New York City for the annual
Advertising Career Conference, which 700 students from across the
country attend.
The
conference includes a visit to a large advertising agency in New York
City and an opportunity for the students to network with various
television, print and/or radio agencies at a reception hosted by AWNY.
