Celebrating the town’s identity with Daniel Boone, the 2nd Annual Daniel Boone Days Festival is bringing music and culture back to Horn in the West this weekend.

“It’s about taking a step back and enjoying a simpler way of life,” Virginia N. Roseman, director of public relations for the Southern Appalachian Historian Association said.

The cultural festival begins in Room 1018 of Appalachian State University’s Raley Hall and concludes at Horn in the West.

The event will take place Friday and Saturday.

“It’s always been my dream to throw a music festival,” Festival Director and Managing Editor of the High Country Press Sam C. Calhoun said.

Planning national musical acts, wine dinners and arranging authors makes this festival a “massive affair,” he said, all while keeping it focused on the area.

“It’s a national event and community event at the same time,” Calhoun said.

Although centered around musical guests, the festival has many other exhibits to offer all ages. They include, but are not limited to: story-telling, country line dancing, living history reenactments, an airwalk for children and adults, multiple art stations, “wacky” musical instruments and approximately 25 different arts and crafts vendors.

“We’ll give all ages and tastes a good time,” Calhoun said.

With approximately 2,000 participants last year, the festival hopes to continue to grow.

Owning the world record of “largest gathering of people dressed like Daniel Boone” at 392, the festival hopes to top this achievement. Breaking and setting this record also acts as a fundraiser for the Watauga Education Foundation.

Headlining for this year’s festival is Donna the Buffalo. Nationally recognized, Donna the Buffalo has chosen to end their 20th anniversary tour with the Daniel Boone Days Festival.

Also featured are The Forget-Me-Nots, a trio of Celtic violinists.

With close proximity to the university, students can walk to the festival.

Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door.
