CSIL appoints fraternity adviser Print E-mail

The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership has appointed former graduate student Michael J. Berger as Coordinator of Fraternities.

During the two years Berger spent pursuing a master’s degree at Appalachian State University, he worked as a graduate assistant for CSIL under Assistant Director Kimberly L. Mitchell and as an intern for Greek life.

“He was great,” former CSIL Assistant Director Aaron H. Bachenheimer said. “He had a real passion for the students and a real passion for Greek life.”

After completing his master’s degree in college student development in May 2008, Berger left to take a position at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., where he served as Assistant Director for Clubs and Organizations as well as adviser for Student Media.

The responsibility of adviser to Appalachian’s 14 Interfraternity Council (IFC) organizations was left vacant when Bachenheimer left the university this year to pursue further education.

In a decision made by CSIL Director A. Jamar Banks and CSIL Associate Director Jim L. Street, Berger was offered the position to take over some of the responsibility handled by Bachenheimer.

“I am honestly honored,” Berger said. “I am extremely excited to be back. It feels like I haven’t even left.”
Banks said the decision to offer the position to Berger was an easy choice not only because of his qualifications, but also because of his previous experience working at Appalachian.

“For all intents and purposes, he was pretty much a logical choice for our office,” Banks said. “He was already pretty much up to speed on many of the things that IFC was doing.”

Since his start date Sept. 1, Berger has served as adviser for each fraternity chapter on campus, the IFC and the IFC executive board, as well as the Greek honors society, Order of Omega.

His other responsibilities include coordinating the logistics of game day tailgating on Duck Pond Field, assisting with programming within Greek life, including Greek Week and the end-of-year Awards Banquet.

Berger will also facilitate the expansion of Phi Gamma Delta as the fraternity establishes a colony on campus this fall.
