Voter registration for the 2009 Watauga County Municipal Elections ends Friday, while early
one-stop voting is scheduled to begin Oct. 15.
In addition to registering through the Watauga County Board of Elections Web site, The Boone Division of Motor Vehicles, Watauga County Board of Elections and Watauga Public Library continue to provide voter registration forms for citizens.
BOE Director Jane Hodges said citizens who fail to register by Friday can do so at one of three early one-stop voting sites.
The BOE office,
located on the first floor of the Watauga County Courthouse, and the
Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center at 252 Poplar Grove Road
in Boone will provide early voting Oct. 15-30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
Plemmons Student Union will also provide voting Oct. 26-30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Oct. 31 will be the last day to vote early or register from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at all three locations.
To register at one of the one-stop early voting sites, citizens must bring personal identification and proof of residency.
“For
example, if they reside in one of the [residence halls], they have to
bring us some form of identification from the university showing that
they reside at that specific [residence hall],” Hodges said. “If they
reside in an apartment [or house] off campus, they must show us
identification from light bills, telephone bills or cable bills.”
On
Election Day, Nov. 3, citizens must vote at one of six voting locations
around Boone depending on their residence, Hodges said.
Representatives
from the Appalachian State University College Democrats of America have
been registering students on Sanford Mall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday
through Friday, and will continue to until Friday, College Democrats
President Brittany N. Sherrill said.
Anthony
C. Riccio, vice chairman of Appalachian College Republicans, said the
club made its push for voter registration at the beginning of the year,
focusing on registering freshman from Aug. 23-25.
