The university is exploring a possible online degree audit program to give students one-stop access to courses given at Appalachian State University.
The program would put automatic reports together for students, which would tell them how far along they are in their degree, Registrar Rose Reinhart said.
Reinhart said the program shows students what courses they must finish before they graduate and provides grade point average and various educational information.
In addition, the
program allows students to switch around their courses and majors, Vice
Provost for Academic Affairs David P. Haney said.
“The
degree audit program shows ‘what-if’ scenarios, which shows you what
you would have to do to switch your major,” Haney said. “It shows you
how your courses you’ve taken will work with another major.”
The
program helps determine what a student has left to do, junior finance
and banking major and Student Government Association Director of
Academic Affairs P.A. Rowe said.
Rowe
said SGA is writing a piece of legislation stating the reason they want
the program, which will be voted on Tuesday during the Student Senate
meeting.
Last
week, several people working on the program met to discuss a particular
software called DegreeWorks, which provides a comprehensive set of
Web-based academic advising, degree audit and transfer articulation
tools.
“We
haven’t made decision yet on which software we’re going to use,”
Reinhart said. “We’re looking at a number of different software.”
Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Susan Davies said
the program will not be fully enacted for at least two years, because
they have to identify appropriate software, purchase the product, look
at all the background work and then share the program with students.
“With
the degree audit program you don’t have to ask your adviser a lot of
questions,” Haney said. “It’ll just make it easier for students to
figure out what courses they need to take.”
