Early voting for the 2009 Watauga County Municipal Elections at Appalachian State University will end Friday at 5 p.m.
Eligible students can vote for mayor and town council members on campus on the first floor of Plemmons Student Union.
Those who have not registered can do so at the voting site with a proof of residence in Watauga County.
“The early voting
polls opened on [Monday], and there were 78 voters on the Appalachian
campus,” Board of Elections Director for Watauga County Jane Hodges
said. “We are very pleased with the turnout at the polls on the
Appalachian campus, but the voting turnout elsewhere in Watauga County
has been a little slow.”
There
were a total of about 450 votes as of noon Tuesday throughout the
county, not counting the votes cast on Appalachian’s campus Tuesday.
“It was
a very easy and fast process,” sophomore English major Tip Powell said
after voting. “I had a few minutes between class, so I decided to come
vote. It doesn’t take much of your time.”
Many of
the candidates for the election can be found on campus with information
on voting and to explain their stance on local and university issues.
“Students
have been showing a fair amount of interest in the voting process on
campus,” Susan McCachren, treasurer for town council candidate Jamie
Leigh’s campaign said. “I’ve had a lot of questions about where to
vote.”
Some students found it helpful to talk with candidates available on campus before voting.
“I spoke
with one of the candidates just before I voted, and I really liked what
they had to say and what they stood for with issues in Boone and here
at Appalachian,” Powell said. “So I decided to go vote.”
