Club baseball prepares for spring season Print E-mail

The statistic 15-2 seems like it would be a team’s season record; for the Appalachian State’s club baseball team, however, it was the score of the ASU versus Elon game.

Although the official season does not start until the spring, the exhibition games happening now are just as important because they give the team time to focus on fundamentals, as well as determine player’s positions.

For an athletic program that was not officially recognized by the school until the 2008-09 season, the club baseball team breezed through its conference last year. The team won the conference title last year and is looking to take it again this year and advance even further in the postseason.

“If we don’t win conference and go to regionals it’ll be a big disappointment,” club president Corey E. Mallard, a junior accounting major said.

The club baseball team does not have an actual coach—instead, they have a group of officers that make collaborative decisions concerning the team.

The baseball teams also feature a triple threat known as the Glass brothers. Kevin and Hunter Glass have both smashed balls out of the park and the youngest, Ryan, will soon follow suit.

With five new freshmen players coming in this year and a total of 10 underclassmen, the transition of replacing the graduated seniors with new starting players has not been too difficult.

“The freshmen seem to be listening really well, everyone is very pleased with the commitment that they’ve shown,” R. Bryan Holbrook, senior business management major said.

Holbrook is one of two players on the team who have played for their entire college career and after leading the team as club president for three years, he stepped down to treasurer in an effort to be able to work with the team after he graduates.

Improved chemistry in the infield combined with more depth in both pitching and catching positions looks promising for this season.
This year the baseball team is looking forward to playing out of conference opponents in the spring.
