Campus radio station WASU’s listeners voted the station into the top 100, 50 and 25 in the country in competition for mtvU’s College Radio Woodie Award.
Although the station did not win the Woodie award, WASU was the only station in North Carolina to receive a nomination and was voted the top station in the South.
WASU Music Director and junior electronic media and broadcasting major David S. Edscorn said the contest heated up as the station made it through the rounds of the competition.
“Once we got into the top 50, it kind of got more intense,” Edscorn said. “We started to get excited about it.”
Out of
the four original finalist stations in the South, including George
Washington University’s WRGW, Vanderbilt University’s WRVU and Florida
State University’s WVFS, WASU remained in the competition the longest.
“For us to be able to compete with those types of schools, it’s great recognition,” WASU Station Manager Jon M. Wood said.
Edscorn said although WASU is “from a relatively small school compared
to a lot of the others in the competition…[the station was] able to
defiantly make an impact, and that just proves that this station is a
great one.”

Lorie E. Harward said Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock sent an e-mail to
Appalachian’s hundreds of thousands alumni, students, faculty and staff
to gain more online votes for the station.
The
remaining stations in the running include Ball State University’s WCRD,
University of Puget Sound’s KUPS, University of Pittsburgh’s WPTS,
University of Missouri’s KCOU and California State University: San
Bernardino’s Coyote Radio.
The
winner of the College Radio Woodie award will be announced by mtvU
online Nov. 18. The Woodie Award show will air on MTV Dec. 4 at 10 p.m.
