The AppalCART has submitted a proposal to the University Student Fee Committee to add a second bus to the Green Route and extend hours on the Pop 105 Route for the 2010-11 school year.
AppalCART Director Christopher D. Turner said the proposal includes adding a second bus to the Green Route to run 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters.
The cost for the additional bus on the Green Route and extended hours for the Pop 105 Route is approximately $90,000, which would increase student fees for the 2010-11 school year by $10.
“A
lot of students I have talked to feel we need an additional Green Route
bus,” Jonathan H. Meisner, Student Government Association president
said.
The
AppalCART system wants the third bus on the Pop 105 Route, which
currently runs for three hours in the morning, to run until 5:30 p.m.

“A
lot of my constituents who live in University Highlands have a problem
with the inconvenience of the Pop 105 Route,” Josh D. Henderson, junior
biology major and SGA senator said. “People are getting left at
Highlands.”
Having
the extra hours on the Pop 105 Route will double frequency and will
encourage more people to ride the AppalCART, Parking and Traffic
Director Barry D. Sauls said.
“It
is a good thing, but we probably will not have enough riders to make
the extended hours necessary,” AppalCART driver Larry Grimes said.
The
2009-10 school year student fees included an order for two new buses,
which will be arriving between Thanksgiving and Christmas, making them
available for use by the time students return for the spring semester.
The two new 36-passenger buses will replace two, 18-passenger buses.
