Petitioners proposed a flat laundry fee for on-campus students at the Student Government Association’s annual Tuition and Fee Forum Tuesday.
Residence Hall Association President Crys L. Newman and former RHA President Thomas A. Brigman suggested a $70 flat rate, added into student fees, as an alternative to swiping an AppCard or depositing quarters into machines.
This would allow students to avoid paying for laundry during the year.
After presenting at
several different RHA meetings and giving a survey to students, the
group is still trying to get the proposal approved by the Student Fee
Committee.
SGA Vice President Michele D. Armstrong said the committee will vote on all student fee proposals today.
Participants in the forum discussed possible weaknesses in the proposition.
One
shortcoming deliberated at the forum was the possible increase in funds
for students. Currently, the average calculated cost of laundry per
year is $63. However, the proposal asks for $70 to balance out those
who do more laundry.
Students
questioned whether or not this was fair, because some students will not
use $70 worth of laundry. Others argued the convenience alone was worth
the extra money.
Other
criticisms included possible abuse of free laundry by students off
campus and keeping campus water usage efficient since students may do
laundry more often if it becomes prepaid.
Students were able to learn about Appalachian’s financial policies and other tuition and fee issues at the forum.
Other fee increase proposals included athletics, Health Services, board (food) and book rental.
The
highest proposal at the forum was an extra $200 housing fee per year
for an additional residence hall and renovations to existing halls,
followed by a $100 Plemmons Student Union fee hike and what would be
the new $70 laundry fee.
