Appalachian State begins its quest for a fourth national championship in five years as they host South Carolina State Saturday at 12 p.m. in the opening round of the 2009 Division I Football Championship.
The matchup should be familiar to Mountaineer fans, as Appalachian faced the Bulldogs in the opening round of last season's playoffs. ASU won that contest 37-21.
"We played them last year, it was a terrific ball game last year," head coach Jerry Moore said. "We knew we were in the playoffs last week, and there's 16 good football teams there. You just [have to] start the new season and take them one at a time. Hopefully we'll be healthy and go play well."
The four seeded teams in the bracket are No. 1 Montana, No. 2 Villanova, No. 3 Southern Illinois, and No. 4 Richmond.
"I
didn't really put that much emphasis on [getting a seed]," Moore said.
"I think that if you're a good football team, you can overcome [not
being seeded]."
The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU. Tickets can be purchased on goasu.com.
