Jay Franklin Derby
Jay Franklin Derby, 20, of Matthews, and a junior at Appalachian State University, passed from this life in a tragic accident Sunday.
Jay was born June 22, 1989 and raised in Charlotte and Matthews. Jay attended Paideia Academy at Oakhurst, Randolph Middle School where he was active on the golf team, and graduated from Butler HS in 2007 where he was active in Jazz Band.
Jay worked at Sagebrush Restaurant in Monroe during breaks from school. Jay was an avid sportsman who loved wakeboarding, snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, boating, fishing, baseball, basketball and golf.
Jay was a fine
young man with a bright future. He wanted to own his own business and
be his own man. He is missed by all who knew him.
Though
a tragic loss, we remember Jay as a blessing to us. We cherish the
memory of the time we had together. We express our heartfelt thanks for
all the love and support we have received from our family, Jay’s
friends, and the ASU community.
Jay was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Sara Boyd, and Joel and Sara Derby.
Jay
is survived by his parents, Michael and Susan Derby of Matthews, his
sister, Heather, of Los Angeles Calif., 4 great aunts, 2 great uncles,
6 aunts and 6 uncles, and 29 cousins.
A
memorial service to celebrate Jay’s life will be held Saturday Nov. 28
at 11 a.m. at Matthews United Methodist Church, 801 S. Trade St.
Matthews, N.C. The family will receive friends after the service.
