So, this is it…“My last hurrah,” as they say. Or, if you prefer, The Final Countdown! (at the very least, I hope that song immediately began playing in your head as you read that, but hopefully you thought of “Gob Bluth”).
It’s time for me to put on my cap, gown and blue suede shoes… well, not really on the shoes, although I am tempted to wear my big pink North Face boots across stage since they are the sole reason I survived living in Boone.
Before I go, I want to thank Appalachian State University for being so amazing.
I took the tour of
the school, and about 45 minutes later, I was in love. I couldn’t get
over how pretty the campus is. I still can’t. I love it. So I want to
say thank you to everyone—from the poor sweet angels that work in
Housing and Residence Life to the guys who work Food Services on wing
night, to Chancellor Peacock. You’ve made my experience incredible.
There
are also a few professors I’d like to mention by name. Thank you to
Roger Bodo, Roger Gonce, and Paul Gates from the Communication
Department. Ol’ Bodo is funny as he is wise, and Professor Gonce has
got style for days. Also, I had so much fun with Professor Gates during
our summer session. I actually enjoyed learning about communication law
thanks to him—plus he has the best stories!
Finally,
thank you to Professor Neel Das. I enjoyed your teaching so much that I
took two of your classes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.
Now, before I bid you adieu, here are a few pieces of advice:
Boone
goes from awesome to flash flood in a matter of 5 minutes. Get a good
raincoat and some galoshes—pronto! You might want to stick an emergency
poncho somewhere in the nether-regions of your backpack, too. You never
know when the flood will hit…
If you are in the waitressing profession like I am, go work in Blowing Rock. You’ll make bank.
Stay up
here for at least one summer. The traffic is perfect, the weather is
gorgeous, the swimming holes are fun and only the coolest people stay
up here during the summertime.
Go for a hike. The Blue Ridge is breath taking.
Go to
class. My marketing professor always includes a Woody Allen quote on
his syllabus that simply states, “90 percent of life is showing up.”
Go play games on Sanford Mall. I once drew a turbo hopscotch on the sidewalk. It was awesome.
Get
involved! (This one’s for you, Jim Street). I participated in Trailhead
Academies and lived and served on the Leadership and Service floor my
freshman year. I even joined a sorority…for a while. I wasn’t in love
with everything I became involved in, but it was really fun along the
way. Then, it led me to something I did fall in love with—The
Appalachian newspaper. It is here I have met some of the coolest and
funniest people I know—people I call friend and hope not to lose
contact with after I leave. On this note, I’d like to say thank you
again to everyone on staff with me. We rock, and I am going to miss you
guys so much.
And now, as promised—adieu.
