After at least two years of deliberating, Appalachian State University’s Student Government Association has approved revisions to their new constitution.
During SGA’s weekly senate meeting Tuesday, members of SGA debated the final edits, grammar mistakes and passed the constitution after two hours.
The constitution is important because it dictates how SGA runs and how the group operates as a body, SGA President Jonathan H. Meisner said.
Meisner said over
the past couple years, the constitution had repeatedly come up in
senate, but they had not been able to come up with anything that
actually worked.
“The
constitution needed to be revamped,” Meisner said. “We couldn’t do a
lot of the things we tried and so we’ve made amendments to the
constitution every year.”
Some of
the last items debated were the minimal grade point average of some
senate members, receiving applications for cabinet members, and whether
to demerit points for missing office hours.
Before
the constitution can take any effect, the student body will need to
vote on it during the spring SGA presidential and vice-presidential
elections, Meisner said.
