Boone Police Department officers arrested and charged sophomore political science major Keven C. Link for his involvement in a series of crimes Sunday around midnight.
Link is charged with one felony count of breaking and entering, four felony counts of breaking into vehicles, one felony count of larceny after breaking into vehicles and one count of misdemeanor larceny, according to the incident report.
The first
incident in the string of crimes occurred at the East King Street Wilco
Hess gas station, where, according to the incident report, Link
committed a larceny of candy and snack items.
Another followed
shortly after the first report at another Wilco Hess gas station on
East King Street, where Link broke the window out of the front door
with a weapon described as an axe or hatchet.
Following
the larceny and breaking and entering incidents at the gas stations,
Boone Police Department Sergeant Matt Stevens said Link proceeded to
Mountaineer Village Apartments off Yosef Drive and broke into a total
of four vehicles parked at the complex.
An iPod and other items were taken from a Jeep Cherokee owned by sophomore criminal justice major Kyle A. Allen.
Allen said in addition to the front passenger window being broken, he found blood on the inside and outside of the vehicle.
Mountaineer
Village Apartment security officers alerted students of the break-ins
and cooperated with police to identify the suspect.
“Between
the surveillance [video], eyewitnesses and evidence left behind, all of
these come into play,” Stevens said. “It wasn’t really a very ‘who done
it’ situation.”
Link was arrested at his residence near Mountaineer Village Apartments at 1663 E. King St.
He is being held under a $20,000 secured bond and a court date was set for Jan. 7, 2010.
In
response to the high number of vehicle break-ins in the last couple of
weeks, Stevens said those leaving their vehicles in lots should
remember to lock their doors and remove valuable items from the
vehicle.
“If you must leave valuables in the car, be sure to keep them out of sight,” he said.
