Recently re-elected Town Council Member Rennie W. Brantz took the oath of office in a ceremony Tuesday morning.
The ceremony, performed by Mayor Loretta Clawson, was scheduled to allow Brantz to be sworn in before the rest of the Town Council, as he will be on a trip to Israel during the regular town council meeting, Dec. 17.
Brantz will depart on Dec. 16 and return Dec. 27, according to the press release.
The trip is
sponsored by the Holocaust Education Foundation and will send Brantz,
an Appalachian State University history professor and Co-Director of
the Office of Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies, to the country to
meet with distinguished scholars and Holocaust experts.
While
abroad, he will visit cities such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa, as
well as making a special stop at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, which
is a center for Holocaust documentation, research, education and
commemoration.
"I’m
really excited about this trip,” Brantz said. “In my courses on the
Holocaust, I always introduce the question, ‘Who are the Jews?’ And
being able to travel and visit Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv will give me new
and additional insights into the Jews today as well as historically.”
He said
while he looks forward to the opportunity to travel and enhance his
curriculum through his experiences, missing the Dec. 17 Town Council
meeting is a disappointment.
Other
recently elected town officials including Mayor Loretta Clawson and
council member Jamie Leigh will be sworn in with first time council
member Andy Ball at the meeting which begins at 6 p.m. in the Town
Council Chambers located on Blowing Rock Road.
