Friday marked the release of “An Appalachian Holiday,” the Hayes’
School of Music’s release of its first holiday collection. The CD,
which features a variety of instrumental and vocal adaptations of
various Christmas tunes, sells for $15.
Dr. Bill Harbinson, dean of the School of Music and overseer of the
project, said he is very enthusiastic about the opportunities the CD
could bring to the Hayes School of Music.
“The good things about this is that all the proceeds [from CD sales] go
right back to the Hayes School of Music,” Harbinson said.
All of the funds generated by CD sales will go directly to scholarship funds for students of the Hayes School of Music.
“An Appalachian Holiday” was compiled from holiday concerts in 2003 and
2004, and Harbinson said the pieces were carefully selected based on
variety.
“This is the first holiday CD we’ve ever put together,” Harbinson said. “So, we’re calling it Volume 1.”
The Hayes School of Music puts on several student and faculty performances each week.
“When a student joins [the Hayes School of Music], they know they’re
going to have a lot of opportunities to perform,” Harbinson said.
Eric G. Johnson, a music education and sacred music major, is a vocalist who will be on the CD.
“It’s a very eclectic collection of music,” Johnson said. “And we’re
pleased that it will get our name out and also give the community an
opportunity to hear some wonderful Christmas music.”
The CD, which the Hayes School of Music said would make a great Christmas gift, is available
at the School of Music.
“If people have enjoyed attending our annual holiday concerts, they
will certainly enjoy our recording, which [consists] of all live cuts
from [the performances],” Harbinson said.
