The Appalachian State women’s basketball team seemed to be in the right place at the right time Tuesday as it manhandled Davidson College 84-69.
With the win, theMountaineers extended their winning streak to three games.
ASU shot 53.8 percent from the floor on its way to totaling the second
most points the team has scored all season. Throughout the game,
Davidson did not have an answer for anything thrown at them.
“I think we are one of the top teams in the league, and we’re just now
starting to play like it,” ASU guard Whitney Tossie said. “I don’t
think anyone can stop us. If we go inside, they will try to stop us,
then we’ll just get it to our guards and hurt them.”
From the beginning, the Mountaineers seemed in control. The only time
ASU trailed was at 4-2, just a minute into the game. At that point,
Appalachian had an 18-4 run and never looked back.
Eboni Kirby led Appalachian as she was perfect from the floor going
7-7. Her 21 points, which tied a career high, led all scorers.
“My team did an absolute great job of getting me the ball,” Kirby said.
“I was just praying that I could get it in every time they passed it to
me.”
Tossie was second on the team with 14 points and added seven assists.
Jocelyn Wyatt added 12 points, extending her streak of scoring in
double digits to five games.
Davidson’s Jessica Mitchell scored 18 points to lead her team in the losing effort.
Outside of Mitchell’s 18, the rest of the Wildcat lineup was silent.
Davidson shot 36 percent from the floor and was outscored in the halves.
Appalachian not only forced Davidson into bad shot selection, but also
forced 18 turnovers.
ASU scored 27 points off of Wildcat mistakes.
“Our shooting was the upside of our defense,’ Kirby said. “As long we play hard on defense, it gives us a boost on offense.”
Head coach Adrienne Shuler was proud of the complete game the Mountaineers played.
“I think it was one of those games where everything went well for us,”
she said. “We knew coming in [Davidson is] one of the hottest teams in
the league. We knew they could put points on the board in a hurry. I
think our kids did a good job of taking their easy shots away.”
Appalachian now stands with a record of 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the Southern Conference.
ASU begins a four-game road trip this weekend when it travels to
College ofCharleston to battle the Cougars for 3rd place. The teams
have already met this season when the Mountaineers defeated Charleston
76-62 in Boone.
