University Highlands offers high levels of convenience Print E-mail

University Highlands Student Apartments, located at 289 Ambling Way, above the intersection of N.C. Highway 105 and N.C. 105 bypass, offers hotel-like accommodations to students.

Apartment options include two-bedroom/two-bathroom units for $520 a month and four-bedroom/two-bathroom units for $410 a month, plus the $300 security deposit, University Highlands manager Ron Branch said.

From hopping on a plane to study abroad in Spain to driving to another county to student teach, students need flexibility and convenience; University Highlands delivers it.

“The best part about the Highlands is the all-inclusive rent,” University Highlands resident and senior electronic media and broadcasting major LaDricus D. Gingles said.

One bill covers water, electricity, cable, local telephone service with voicemail and Ethernet via fiber optic technology to Appalachian State University’s system, Branch said.

“We have fall term leases designed for one semester students,” Branch said.

Because the apartments are owned by Appalachian State University, schedules are “always in sync with the academic calendar,” Branch said.

For those roommate issues that just cannot be solved (it happens to the best of us), Highlands offers individual leases in case of conflict or unanticipated moving plans.

“You won’t get stuck with extra rent,” Branch said.

To prevent roommate disasters, students fill out profile sheets. Prospective highlanders are asked to write a “narrative block to describe themselves,” Branch said.

“A single person can come in looking for roommates and go through the sheets to pick people they feel they would be most compatible with,” Branch said.

Jillian M. Scott, a Highlands resident and junior elementary education major, said she is happy with the roommates she received through a lottery pick.

The apartments are completely furnished.

“You don’t have to haul things up and down the mountain,” Branch said.

Every apartment has a garbage disposal, full-size washer and dryer and access to recycling. Individual recycling bins are available upon request, Branch said.

The AppalCART passes through University Highlands every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening up until 11 p.m.

“I chose to live at the highlands because it is convenient, furnished and close to the AppalCART,” Scott said.

The Highlands do not allow pets or kegs.

“Seven hundred and sixty-eight college students could get out of hand easily,” Branch said.

Branch said there are not many problems security has to deal with.

“The walking patrol do not carry guns or mace,” Branch said. “They are there as night walking escorts and to calm noise down.”

“Most of the time the security guards are nice and just tell you to turn it down. Small get-togethers are allowed,” Gingles said.

Although the security is active, “they can’t go into an apartment without 24-hour notice,” Branch said.

Compared to other apartment complexes in the area, Highlands has the biggest array of amenities: a sundeck with a heated pool and Jacuzzi; a clubhouse with a computer lab, work out equipment, pool table, ping pong table, television and common area; and a picnic area with grills, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts.
