The sounds of soulful jazz will fill Broyhill Inn and Conference Center Friday night.
Colleges Against Cancer hosts its inaugural Jazz Dinner to raise money for Appalachian State University’s Relay for Life, which takes place April 21, Colleges Against Cancer President Emily K. Steinbaugh said.

The event was originally scheduled to take place at Coffey’s Restaurant & Bar, but because it closed for remodeling, a new location had to be found quickly, Steinbaugh said.

“This evening is special because it brings together many parts of our community,” Steinbaugh said. “Students, faculty, staff and members the Boone community will be participants in this unique event.”

Relay for Life is an overnight event where teams run or walk laps. All money raised by the teams is donated to the American Cancer Society for research and programs, according to the society’s Web site.

Steinbaugh said Appalachian will once again compete with Western Carolina University to see who can raise the most money.

The dinner will take place in the Helen Powers Grand Ballroom in Broyhill and will start at 7 p.m. Steinbaugh said the price of the dinner, which consists of five courses and wine paired with each course, is $75 and can only be purchased in advance. Of that, at least $25 will be added to the money raised during Relay for Life.

Steinbaugh said a silent auction starts at 6 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. Among the donations are ski tickets, artwork and wine.

A jazz concert featuring the Patrick Brown Quintet takes place at 9 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $5.

The Patrick Brown Quintet plays weekly at Crossroads on Monday nights.

“Cancer affects us all in some way or another, and events like these allow us a proactive way of keeping the fight alive,” Steinbaugh said.
