| The winner of the Commissioner’s Cup, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, barely squeaked out a victory.
Chattanooga finished in first place with a score of 82.5 points, edging out the Mountaineers who finished with 81 points.
Not only had ASU won 13 straight cups, but also 20 of the last 21 and 25 of the last 27.
Points for the Commissioner’s Cup are given to each SoCon institution based on its final standing in each respective sport.
The conference champion for each sport receives 12 points, the second
place team 11 points, the third place team 10 points and so on, down to
the last team in the conference.
If there is a conference tournament, the tournament champion receives in additional two points.
This is Chattanooga’s first Commissioner’s Cup since joining the conference in 1977.
This year, Chattanooga boasted first place finishes in men’s cross country, basketball and wrestling.
In addition to finishing first in the North Division, the Mocs also won
the conference tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament and gain an
additional two points in the cup standings.
The Mocs also claimed important points by finishing third in both indoor and outdoor track as well as fourth place in golf.
The Mocs did finish last in football, but it was the only sport where they finished well below the middle of the standings.
Appalachian was almost able to bring the cup to Boone in large part due to the success of the running programs.
The Mountaineers finished in first place in indoor and outdoor track and second place in cross country.
For his efforts, the United States Track Coaches Association named
director of track & field John Weaver the 2005 Mondo Outdoor
Southeast District men’s coach of the year.
In other conference standings, ASU finished third in soccer and fourth in football.
On the flip side, ASU was hurt by poor seasons from the baseball team, wrestling squad, golf team and tennis team.
In sports that both schools sponsor, ASU finished ahead of Chattanooga
in the final standings four times and Chattanooga finished ahead of ASU
four times.
Appalachian State is the only school in the Southern Conference to have
a team for every sport, something that contributed to ASU’s streak.
The Mocs do not have a soccer or baseball team, but still managed to
win the
cup.
