•When first receiving
your invitation, respond in a timely fashion, since guest selections
are based on the number of declines they receive.
•If you must cancel after you have accepted, let the couple know as soon as possible.
•On the day of the wedding, arrive 15 minutes early. If you are late,
find a break in the ceremony to walk in down a side aisle – it is
tradition for no one to walk down the center aisle after the bride.
•Turn off your cell phone.
•Do not take pictures during the ceremony – but do take pictures at the
reception. Candid shots from friends are sometimes more appreciated
than a professional photographer’s shots.
•Don’t bring a guest unless your invitation clearly says “+1 guest.”
•While customary to bring a gift to the wedding, it is a bit of a
hassle for the wedding party. Sending a gift is acceptable and is
preferred before the wedding.
•When selecting a gift, try to choose something both the bride and
groom will appreciate. If a registry is not used, a cash gift is
appropriate.
•Be sure to have a good time and take advantage of an open bar at the
reception, but be cautious. No one likes an obnoxiously drunk guest.
Attire for Women
•Informal daytime: short dress or suit
•Informal evening: cocktail dress
•Semi-formal daytime: short dress or suit
•Semi-formal evening: cocktail dress
•Formal daytime: short dress or suit
•Formal evening/black tie: long dress or short, dressy cocktail dress, including accessories
•Extra-formal evening/white tie: long gown with many glitzy accessories
•Do not wear white – it competes with the bride. Black and sequins are not suggested for daytime weddings.
•In the event that an invitation does not specify the wedding’s
formality, anything pastel or floral works well during the day, and a
black dress is a safe bet after 6 p.m.
Attire for Men
•Informal daytime: dress shirt and pants with a sports jacket
•Informal evening: suit
•Semi-formal daytime: suit
•Semi-formal evening: dark suit
•Formal daytime: dark suit with a tie
•Formal evening/black tie: tuxedo
•Extra formal evening/white tie: white tie, cummerbund, vest and shirt
•Do not wear a tuxedo during the daytime. A dark suit and a tie is a safe bet for any wedding.
