Appalachian State got Buzz Peterson’s second head coaching stint off on the right foot Friday night as they downed the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington 79-68 at the Holmes Convocation Center.

The Mountaineers got off to a slow start, turning the ball over three times in the first four minutes of play. ASU did not score its first points until 18:00 left in the half.

Appalachian shook off the rust after the under-16 minute media timeout, thanks in part to the play of Isaac Butts.

Butts scored eight points in the first eight minutes of the game on perfect 4-4 shooting. The Mountaineers led 22-14 halfway through the first half.

Kellen Brand came on strong for Appalachian in the last 10 minutes of the half. Brand led the Mountaineers at the break with 12 points, 10 of which came from the free-throw line.

Appalachian led the Seahawks 44-31 at the half.

ASU started the second half on a 7-2 run as Donald Sims contributed five points in the first minute of play.

Appalachian built its lead to 19 points with 13:16 left in the second after a jumper by freshman Nathan Healy.

The lead would not hold, however, as the Seahawks began to mount a comeback.

UNC-W forced seven Mountaineer turnovers in the last 12 minutes of the game, and the Seahawks cut the lead to 12 with 3:37 left in the contest.

After shooting 60.9 percent in the first half, the Mountaineers struggled on offense in the second, shooting only 38.1 percent after the intermission.

The Seahawks cut the Appalachian lead to four points with 32 seconds left in the game, but they would get no closer as the Mountaineers made five of their next six free throws to ice the game.

UNC-W forward John Fields was ejected from the game after being called for a flagrant foul on Brand with 4 seconds left.

Brand and Sims led the scoring for the Apps, finishing with 20 and 18 points respectively. Brand made all 14 of his free throw attempts on the night.

ASU returns to action tomorrow at East Tennessee State.
