Wrestling team dominates in opening match |

The Appalachian State University wrestling team dominated its opening match against Wagner University, winning 46-3.
The Mountaineers had one stretch of over six-straight pins from the 133-174 weight classes.
Senior Terreyl Williams (133), junior Scott Ervin (149), freshman Tommy
Hutchinson (165), junior Neal Martin (174), junior Eddie Hutchinson
(157) and freshman Clinton Swango (141) won their matches within the
first two periods.
Mountaineer freshmen, Swango, Brody Essick (125) and Brandon Brothers (184) all debuted for the Mountaineers.
The team will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. Sunday for its next match during the Keystone Classic.
Cross country places 11th
The Appalachian State University women’s cross country team finished in
11th place Saturday at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship in
Louisville, Ky.
Graduate Jenna Wrieden earned all-region accolades finishing in 22nd.
Senior Kasey Smith finished second for ASU coming in 47th place, and junior Meghan Gaffney came in 48th place.
All five scorers for ASU finished in the top half of the 215-runner race.
The Mountaineer men were the top team from the Southern Conference, scoring 417 points.
Redshirt freshman Phil Mitchell finished in 40th place, and the men’s cross country team finished 14th out of 32 teams.
Mitchell finished the 10-kilometer course in 32:00:05, and was followed
by junior Ryan O’Keefe, who finished 60th with a 33:32:65 finish. All
five of ASU’s scoring runners finished in the top half of the
222-runner field.
