Flipside is a bar near Appalachian State where students and community members hang out. Anna Donlan

There is a stretch of U.S. Highway 321 where three restaurants and bars battle for business by offering what many students consider inexpensive food, extensive beer options, and a guaranteed crowd.

Flipside, Klondike Café and Parthenon Café, which are located directly next door to each other, present students and locals with varying options in close vicinity.

Though they share the same side of the highway, each establishment provides patrons with unique specials and events.

Flipside brings the flavor of Chicago-style pizza to its customers, along with select Foothills Brewing beers brewed in Winston-Salem.

“[Flipside] offers food and drinks at a reasonable price for students,” said Jay Jay Johnson, Flipside bar manager and comic act.  “Other bars don’t have a specific food people can go there for.”

On Wednesdays, guests can treat themselves to Flipside’s ‘buy one, get one free’ small pizza special.

Perhaps the most active night at Flipside is Thursday, when Pabst Blue Ribbon is sold for 75 cents a pop.

Customers can enjoy local music acts and Johnson’s comedy routine, while munching on a deep-dish pizza or the complementary popcorn, nearly every weekend at Flipside.

While the bar closes at 2 a.m., night owls can schmooze and order food until 4 a.m., depending on the crowd.

Flipside’s next-door neighbor also attracts quite a sizable student crowd.

Klondike Café owner Allie K. Woods is much happier now that the fall semester is in full swing.

Woods said students make up about 90 percent of his business.

While Klondike Café sells more alcohol than food, Woods said customers are “pleasantly surprised” after eating at the restaurant.

“It’s a unique menu.  Compared to other places in town... we’ve got variety and people enjoy the wraps,” Woods said.

On Mondays, all wraps, including the popular Buffalo Chicken wrap, are $4.99 and Busch Light draft is 75 cents with the purchase of a Klondike glass.

Returning guests can bring their Klondike mug back for seconds on future Mondays.

Though they don’t offer many brews on draft, Klondike Café has about 40 different types of bottled beer on hand.

Klondike Café houses and sponsors Greek functions once or twice a month, Woods said.

In the past, Klondike has not booked many music acts.

Woods said he plans on increasing live performances to about three per month.

Woods also plans to give Klondike Café a facelift for the outside of the building and possibly some other aesthetic additions throughout the year.

Parthenon Café rounds out the strip of bars with their own dining niche.

While the restaurant’s beverages receive substantial business from its $1 beer specials on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Parthenon’s authentic Greek gyros have garnered a following of loyal customers as well.

The café also offers 35 cent wings on Mondays and Thursdays to attract the likes of even the most penniless college students.

Parthenon has ushered in the new football season by adding a projection screen for the outside patrons to go along with the numerous televisions inside the establishment.

Parthenon cook Michael L. Harrell said the café has the upper hand on the other competition because of its spaciousness and the quality of the food.

“This strip [of bars] is really an awesome spot,” said Harrell.  “It’s the first thing you see when you drive through Boone.”
