One suspect was arrested Wednesday for the Greenwood Lot armed robbery that occurred Oct. 1. Three more suspects were arrested Friday.
“Four of them got together to commit the robbery; they planned it, went to the lot and three of them knew it was going to take place,” Captain Eddie Rector of Appalachian State University Police said.
Freshman
marketing major Mu-Tse Michael Lin was arrested Oct. 3 and charged with
robbery with a dangerous weapon, a Class D felony.
“He is probably facing jail time,” University Police Detective Darin Tolbert said.
The three suspects arrested Friday are Justin Lee Boles, a freshman psychology major, Christopher
Wright Brown, a freshman management major, and Shawn Michael Connor, a freshman business
education major.
They were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
“Conspiracy to commit an armed robbery means they knew it was taking place and they played along,”
Rector said. “The three people in the car who said they got robbed were the three who conspired to
commit the robbery; they were in on it.”
The one ‘real victim’ did not receive his money back. He had $600 in his wallet.
The other three ‘victims’ who conspired did get their money back, Rector said.
University Police is required to let the campus community know if a serious crime occurs.
“We are bound by law and we have found that e-mail is the easiest way to communicate,” Tolbert said.
“It is a good way for people to respond back to us.”
The gun used was not an actual gun and has been recovered; it was an air-soft pistol, Tolbert said.
“Originally when [the robbery] was reported to us, the suspect was reported as a black male wearing a
dark ski mask and dark clothes,” Tolbert said.
The actual suspect is an Asian male.
“The real victim said he thought [the suspect] was a black male, and the other three males in the
robbery went with it,” Rector said. “Through the investigation, evidence, statements and other
information, we were led to believe that they did conspire,” Rector said.
More charges are possible for all suspects and it will be left up to the district attorney, Tolbert said.
According to the Oct. 5 press release, all three suspects were taken before a Watauga County
magistrate and placed in the Watauga County Detention Center under a $12,500 secured bond.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 13.
