Appalachian State University has graced the cover of yet another major sports magazine with February 2008’s edition of ESPN magazine.

In the top left-hand corner of the magazine cover titled “The Fans Take Over,” a man is placed wearing an Appalachian ice hockey jersey next to a Michigan fan.

That man is Appalachian State 2005 alumnus Jacob L. Mustian.

The Appalachian: How did you get on the cover of ESPN Magazine?
Jacob Mustian: My agent sent me to a photo shoot and they were looking for sports nuts. They particularly wanted any hockey team, professional or college, football teams and baseball teams. They also wanted Vancouver or Appalachian State. So, I wore my ASU hockey jersey from 2000-02, and my Black Saturday hat.

TA: Why an Appalachian State hockey jersey?
JM: I was good friends with the guys on the club team. A guy named BJ, one of the captains, gave me the jersey if I would give the hockey team a shout-out while I was doing stand up at Geno’s.

TA: What was it like sitting next to a Michigan fan at the photo shoot?
JM: It was nonstop laughter on my part. There was this cute little girl and this other guy Michigan fan. I just kept breaking his balls about [our win]. During the first shoot in the studio the guy spotted me and he immediately recognized the jersey.

TA: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done at an Appalachian State game?
JM: After one game, I stole a car. I met this girl and ended up hanging out with her and a friend. Well, they wanted me to pick something up for them and she gave me her keys. When I woke up the next morning around 5 a.m., I still had the keys and just drove back to my place.  The cops showed up at my place at 9 a.m. looking for me. I ended up having to go to court. She was mad but wanted to drop the charges.

TA: Did you go to the Michigan game?
JM: I went and not only was it good for Appalachian, but it was a good game in general.

TA: Who is your favorite Appalachian football player?
JM: Corey Lynch - that man is incredible. Also, Dexter Jackson. I hope he goes to the pros - he deserves every right to. And of course, Armanti Edwards.

TA: How closely did you follow the season and how often did you come to games?
JM: I listened to every game on the Internet. I can’t watch the games up here [in NYC]; they just don’t have them. Listening to games is a lot more intense because you have to make your own picture; I’d get so frustrated, I just wanted to turn it off.

TA: What makes you an Appalachian fan?
JM: The atmosphere of game day and the school. Everyone is so laid back. Everyone just gets along so well. I spent seven years at [Appalachian]. I have three minors and a major and haven’t used any of them. I’m into comedy now. If you go to [Appalachian], you become a family.

TA: How many copies of the magazine did you purchase?
JM: About five. I bought one to put in plastic and one to read through and a few to give to some family members.
