After serving as a staple in downtown Boone for 24 years, Our Daily Bread deli and café is receiving wall-to-wall renovations in hopes of reverting back to the building’s turn-of-the-century style, restaurant owner Sam R. Parker said.

Parker said the newly refurbished Our Daily Bread will expose original stonework and pine floors in addition to other amenities, such as new booths and a bar.

Parker said though there will be some aesthetic additions to the restaurant, the menu will remain
unchanged.

“It’s not like we are starting a new restaurant,” Parker said. “It’s just Our Daily Bread growing up.”

Blue Ridge Insulated Concrete Construction (BRICC) is heading the renovation effort, which began Feb.
18 and is set to conclude March 3.

Steven D. Figlow, general contractor on the site, said the restaurant will feature new kitchen equipment
that will align with a new Town of Boone ordinance requiring grease catchers, something he said many
restaurants in Boone are still lacking.

Site carpenter John W. Pegram said the all-new booths will be custom-made by BRICC, which will also
install pendant lights and a new ceiling.

The addition of a bar not only changes the landscape of the restaurant, but will affect the restaurant’s
operating hours as well.

The bar will boast six beer taps, and will extend the restaurant’s closing time from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,
Parker said.

Parker said the bar will be geared toward individuals who want to sit alone, read the newspaper and
perhaps have a pint after work.

Upon reopening, Our Daily Bread will employ a point-of-sale system that will keep food and drink
inventory as well as function as a sales data recorder and clock-in system for employees – all made
accessible through a computer touch system, Parker said.

The current renovation project is the second remodeling effort since Parker purchased the building over
nine years ago.

Parker undertook the first renovation project to eliminate a wall that divided the restaurant in half.

More recently, the building had a linear set up that featured the dining area on one wall and the
plumbing on the other side of the restaurant.

Parker said the new revisions will “streamline [the dining and kitchen areas] and make it more
efficient.”

Figlow and Parker both said the Town of Boone “has been really helpful” in the renovation process.

Parker said the latest renovation effort, which aims to restore the antiquity of the building, will be the
last at Our Daily Bread.

“We were out-of-date and we knew it,” Parker said. “College towns are really progressive and change is
necessary.”

Parker said he hopes to have Our Daily Bread up and running March 4 after renovations are completed.
