Women’s tennis team suffers loss to College of Charleston |

The Appalachian State University women’s tennis team fell victim to a 7-0 College of Charleston shutout Sunday.
The Mountaineers suffered 8-0 and 8-2 defeats to start off the match in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots, respectively.
In the No. 3 position, sophomore Amanda Cash and junior Lindsay King provided some momentary
hope for the Mountaineers, going up 3-0 on the competition before the Cougars rallied back to an 8-4
victory.

The Mountaineers didn’t fare much better in singles play, unable to claim victory in any single set.
Senior Anja Gugger and junior Lindsay King both fell at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots respectively by
scores of 6-1 in each set.
Sophomore Amanda Cash dropped the No. 3 position in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
Freshman Elizabeth Holland and sophomore Carolina Mauch were able to put up some resistance in
the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, but were also defeated in two sets.
The best look for a Mountaineer singles victory came from the No. 2 spot, where junior Monica Tomas
battled with Charleston counterpart Laura Borza only to lose 6-4 in both sets.
With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 7-11 overall and 1-8 in the Southern Conference, while the
Cougars advance to 20-3 overall with a conference record of 7-1.
Appalachian head coach Colin Crothers noted the strength of the Cougars team, whose only
conference loss all season came at the hands of SoCon leader Furman University, currently ranked
67th in the nation.
“What else can I say, they’re just really tough,” Crothers said. “We played them tough in certain areas.”
Crothers looks to take what silver linings there were to be seen and
lessons to be learned from the match and move forward to Thursday’s
final home match against East Carolina University.
“[Tomas] played well at No. 2, and we were coming back at No. 4,” he said. “Even in the doubles, the
score doesn’t indicate it but we played them pretty close.”
After the East Carolina University match, the Mountaineers look to the Southern Conference
Tournament in Charleston, S.C., April 17-20.
