New coffeehouse offers safe heaven, fellowship, drinks

Son’s Light Coffeehouse, a relatively new addition to the Boone business scene, has a message that extends beyond simply serving coffee.

It is part of the Christian ministry Son’s Light Ministries, which was organized by David and Dawn Ward.

According to the ministry’s Web site, “The primary purpose of Son’s Light Ministries is to help students in grades 7-12 and college to come to know God and, through that revelation, make Him known.”

Joy Ward, daughter of the coffeehouse’s owner David Ward, said every Saturday at 8 p.m. people gather inside for worship music and a speaking event.

After the speaking event, a college student is given an opportunity to speak.  The microphone then remains open for the rest of the event.

Ward said one purpose of these meetings was to create a safe place for students to go as an alternative to other nightly activities available in Boone.

She said a major goal of having students speak was to “give students a chance to lead.”

The ministry’s plan for these activities started out as an idea by David Ward.

The events have changed location a couple of times over the years, including a period in which Cornerstone Church provided them with a location.

They moved to their current location beside Los Arcoiris off U.S. Highway 321 a month ago. According to the Son’s Light Coffeehouse Web site, in addition to the Sunday night activities, it also offers an after-school homework assistance service for middle and high school students from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and a Friday night gathering for youth from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with activities that include movies, games and music.

According to the Web site, in addition to the coffeehouse, Son’s Light Ministries organizes a variety of other groups and activities in the area, including a praise band, a prayer and witness team, and the High Country Youth Festival.

The Coffeehouse gets its coffee from Conrad’s Coffee in Boone.

“We couldn’t have done it without them,” said Ward.

Son’s Light Coffeehouse is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day except Wednesdays, when it closes at 6:30 p.m., and on Sunday, when it is closed.
