APPS serves up entertainment fixes

From concerts to comedians, this group of hardworking students is ensuring Appalachian State students have entertainment all year long.

The Appalachian Popular Programming Society is gearing up to present students with entertainment needs for the year.

“Every year, we strive to beat the attendance benchmark from the year before,” APPS President and senior interdisciplinary major Scott A. Walker said.

Corey Smith performs at Legends. APPS brings many entertainment acts to campus each year.

This year, APPS is looking forward to having another big year for concerts, although contracts with artists are still being arranged.

“But believe me when I say, we’ve got big things cooking,” Walker said. “We don’t really know big concerts long in advance. For instance, we didn’t know about Colbie Caillat playing until about two months prior to the show date.”

APPS is also looking forward to creating a better variety of entertainment
for students.

Co-sponsored by Appalachian State Greek Life and APPS, a Video DJ Dance will take place Aug. 27 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Legends. Admission is free.

The first band to perform this year will be Do it to Julia Aug. 28 at 9 p.m.

Tickets for the show are $3 in advance, $4 at the door and Appalachian ID is required for admittance.

APPS will also present “ASU vs. LSU on the Big Screen,” Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Legends.

Admittance is free, all ages are welcome, but no alcohol allowed on the premises.
Events like the ASU vs. LSU game is just one example of the diverse range of shows APPS presents.

“We worked really hard last year to minimize the number of cover bands that we bring to Legends,” Walker said. “We  have seven councils full of students trying their best to come up with a full schedule of exciting and diverse entertainment for our campus.”

APPS members brainstorm events and promotions, and also listen to feedback from the Appalachian community in terms of needs to be met.

The seven different councils plan events ranging from dances and comedians to special events in Plemmons Student Union.

In the past, these special events have included building gingerbread houses for the holidays and creating custom signs.

The seven councils are Concerts, Films, Stage Shows,  Club Shows, Appalachian Heritage, Council for Cultural Awareness and Special Events.
