The dark and relaxed atmosphere of The Library Restaurant and Pub is a stark contrast to the bright and rushing world outside.
Owner Dean Murphy’s vision for The Library was to have a place where students and faculty, along with all citizens of the Town of Boone can come to unwind.
Tomorrow will be The Library’s grand opening.
Murphy transformed the once barren building into a full service bar and restaurant, within a few months.
“When we came in here… there was nothing,” Murphy said. “No sinks, no
anything. No

tables, no chairs, no TVs, and nothing behind the bar.”
Now, however, The Library has been converted into a bar with more
amenities and forms of entertainment containing several televisions,
pool tables, video games, and a dance floor.
The walls are decorated in yellow and black and filled with ASU banners and posters.
“We’ve made [the indoor entrance area] into more of a sports bar, while
the indoor and outdoor patios are more of a dining area,” Murphy said.
“In the old Library, I’ve been told, there were more tables and there
wasn’t much area to move around or dance, especially when we have a DJ,
live music, or karaoke.”
“Inside is more of the bar scene, while the outside is more of a family
scene,” sophomore public relations major and waitress Jaclyn G. Wagoner
said.
The menu has also changed.
Kitchen Manager and Head Chef David Dickey has been a chef for over 20
years and specializes in many of the foods The Library serves.
The Library serves an assortment of sandwiches, pastas, meats, and
appetizers; however, there are options for vegetarians as well.
“I think you’ll love our food,” Murphy said. “We’ve not had one complaint yet.”
Murphy is in the process of creating lunch and dinner specials for both the students and faculty of Appalachian.
“ASU students contribute an excessive amount of money to the Town of
Boone,” Murphy said. “It’s important to include them when planning your
business.”
The waitresses are still required to wear schoolgirl uniforms, but they will project a more conservative and classy image.
“I like the school girl outfits; I think they fit well with the concept
of The Library,” Murphy said. “I want to keep it sexy, but I also want
to keep it classy.”
Also, due to the new laws allowing liquor in Boone, The Library will soon begin serving mixed drinks.
The Library currently serves several different brands of beer along
with brewtenders, a large dispenser that holds several beers at a time
while keeping them cold.
“The brewtenders allow a group of people to split the cost, which is
cheaper than buying several drinks. It also saves time for the
waitresses, they’re not having to go back and forth every five
minutes,” Murphy said.
Murphy also has several different entertainment nights in the works.
The Library will be having a trivia night, as well as a Texas Hold’Em tournament once a week, both with prizes for the winners.
Those who participate in the Texas Hold’Em tournament, which is free of charge, will earn points for every game they win.
At the end of the year, the winner with the most points will be able to
participate in the World Series of Poker free of charge; Murphy will
pay the winner’s entry fee.
There will be tents set up outside with activities, as well as samples of the food.
All events are free and Appalachian students are encouraged to attend.
