The Career Development Center has made many improvements to its technology since last school year.

According to CDC’s mission, “our staff works to develop the career and professional skills of students, and facilitates unions between our students and employers that benefit the state as a whole.”

The improvements made in the CDC are helping to provide just that.

“We want to make it easy for alumni and students with busy schedules,” Career Counselor Liaison to the College of Education, Virginia E. Page said.

The CDC offers a variety of services built to assist busy students and alumni with finding a career that suits them inside, as well as outside of the office.

There are five counselors who assist students from each college within Appalachian State University in their journey towards finding a career.

Not only has the CDC received four new Apple Macintosh and Dell computers for students to use, the center has also made additions to their Web site to make it more dynamic by providing services such as Skype and Career Gear.

For employers who cannot make it to campus, Skype allows them to interview Appalachian students from their computer.

The CDC provides computers in each of the seven interview rooms equipped with brand new Logitech Web cams for students to use for mock interviews critiqued by counselors and interviews with actual employers.

Students are no longer limited to employers who are only available to set up an interview in Boone.

“Technology is bridging the gap between employers and students caused by an ever increasing energy crisis,” Instructional Technologist Josh L. Silvey said.

Silvey also expects the demand for the technological services to increase as the cost of energy goes up.

Career Gear was written for Appalachian State University by Electronic Student Services and allows students to view where certain interviews are, post their resumes and allow the viewer to sign up for interviews.

From June 6, 2007 to June 6, Career Gear has had 2,061 jobs posted, 1,693 new students, and 560 new employers, according to the CDC Technology Blog.

Something Silvey hopes to see for the future is online job fairs.

The CDC is working towards a goal “to make sure that every service offered in the center is offered online,” Silvey said.
