Appalachian State University’s Student Government Association officers have begun their terms in office, and are now working with members of the student body and community.
David F. Mofford, student body president and senior political science major said one of his main goals this year is to increase the feeling of safety on Appalachian’s campus.
He said the overall issue of safety is of
great importance to him as president because a student once told him
she did not feel safe on Appalachian’s campus.
“This is a safe campus,” Mofford said. “[Students] have the right to feel safe at school.”
He said one of the highlights of his time in
office so far is being able to sit on the university’s board of
trustees and cast his vote representing the interests of the student
body.
Vice President Kendra M. Johnson, senior social work major
said one of her largest responsibilities this year is to chair the Student
Senate.
She is responsible for arranging speakers for senate
meetings and working with the rules chairman to help determine what legislation
will make it to the senate floor.
She said she also works in person with the directors of each
student committee.
Director of Civic Engagement Zachary L. Grier, sophomore
geology major said he is currently working on a voter registration drive for
students, working with residence halls to help students register.
He said there will be contact tables available Monday at
Newland Residence Hall for students who wish to register to vote in the Town of
Boone.
He said one of his main tasks was “making people aware of
what’s going on and making them care about it.”
Director of Environmental Affairs, T. Andrew Edmonds,
sophomore political science major said he is currently working to help get a
zoning permit and contractor for the wind turbine project near the Broyhill Inn
& Conference Center.
He is also currently working to help develop a monitoring
system for the photovoltaic cells outside Thelma C. Raley Hall in order to
inform students how much energy it’s generating, he said.
Director of Campus Outreach Matthew S. Moseley, sophomore
marketing major said his most important task is to serve as a liaison to over
300 clubs on campus, interacting with leaders and attending club meetings.
He said a major project he will be undertaking this semester
is called “Stick it to Peacock,” a cardboard cutout of the Chancellor which
students will be able to attach messages to.
The cutout then will then be delivered to the Chancellor
himself.
Stacy C. Covington, director of external affairs and senior
history and secondary education major said much of the work she is doing
involves organizing the events at homecoming, like the parade and homecoming
court.
She is also in charge of the student discount card service,
where businesses offer discounts to Appalachian students, she said.
Director of Multicultural Affairs Malia A. Cantrell, junior
marketing major said her job involves working closely with the many
multicultural groups that exist on campus.
She said the most interesting part of her job was being able
to meet in person with the presidents and members of each group.
Laura E. Byrd, sophomore political science major and SGA
chief of staff said her primary duty was to keep things running smoothly and
efficiently in the office, and serving as an aide to Mofford and Johnson.
She is also responsible for planning cabinet meetings.
Rachel E. Hicks, sophomore political science major and SGA’s
director of public relations and press secretary, said her main duty was making
sure students know what SGA is doing on a day-to-day basis.
“People think SGA is shrouded in mystery, but it isn’t,”
Hicks said.
She also maintains SGA’s Web sites and meets with the press,
she said.
Lynsey M. Austin senior psychology, major serves as the
secretary for SGA’s cabinet and senate.
Her duties include taking minutes at cabinet and senate
meetings, and aiding in the day-to-day operations of the office, she said.
Philip P. Schneider, junior finance and banking major,
serves as the Treasurer for SGA.
It is
his second term in this office, and he served as a senator representing Frank
Residence Hall his freshman year, according to SGA’s Web site.
His responsibilities involve supervising all monetary
activities involving SGA, as well as representing SGA on university committees
whose activities involve tuition and fees, according to the site.
