The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce with Piedmont Federal Savings Bank in Boone is hosting an Appalachian State University Appreciation Week that kicked off this morning.
The appreciation week came about several years ago from the Chamber of Commerce with help from the Town of Boone and Appalachian Relations Committee.
The Boone Chamber
of Commerce wants to recognize Appalachian students and faculty because
they contribute economically, culturally and educationally to the
community, Manager of Marketing and Member Services, Lori A. Inman said.
“In 2007
Appalachian State University student volunteers contributed more than
93,000 hours of community service in Boone and Watauga county, and that
is the equivalent of $1.85 million worth of time,” Inman said.
There
was a strong need to be involved with the community, involved with
schools and be a good corporate citizen, Piedmont Federal Savings
Marketing Director Larry W. Stephenson said.
Beginning
this year the Chamber of Commerce solicited a sponsor and chose
Piedmont Federal Savings Bank to help sponsor, Inman said.
The idea
for this appreciation week was recommended to Stephenson and the
corporate office in Raleigh from the bank’s Boone Branch Manager, Susan
M. Norris.
This morning featured “Wake-up Watauga at the Dan’l Boone Inn,” according to Appalachian’s Web site.
Starting at 8 a.m., Head Football Coach Jerry Moore spoke to a large crowd over ham biscuits, cinnamon buns, coffee and juice.
In an
added effort to reach out to clubs and students, representatives from
the Chamber of Commerce and Piedmont Federal will attend the next group
meetings for Staff Council, Student Ambassadors, Student Senate, the
President’s Club and Faculty Senate, Inman said.
“[The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce] wanted to reach out to more of the clubs and organizations this year,” Inman said.
According
to the Web site, Monday at 12:30 p.m. members of the chamber and the
bank will host an ice cream social on Sanford Mall.
Ice cream will be served to students, faculty and staff as long as supplies last.
In case of rain the social will be moved to the portico of Plemmons Student Union, Inman said.
She said
it is the goal of the Chamber to help raise awareness of their
organization and for students to potentially provide business.
The goal for Piedmont Federal was to help raise awareness of the company among students.
“[Piedmont
Federal Savings Bank] is excited to be involved and will continue to be
a good citizen in the community,” Stephenson said.
