The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Center will open in room 106 of Plemmons Student Union Friday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m.

Joyce T. Washington, the graduate assistant assigned to the center said a GLBT task force created in 2002 proposed the center to Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock, who approved it this summer.

Washington said she believes the center will be an important asset to GLBT students.

“The center will be used for educational purposes. We will coordinate pamphlets, e-mails and referrals to educate anyone who wants it,” she said. “And this isn’t restricted to GLBT students, any student will be allowed to get information.”

The Web site glbt.appstate.edu also offers help for those who would like more information regarding GLBT life at Appalachian State University, as well as definitions of terms that may confuse individuals such as “transgender” and “gender identity.”

Washington said she is glad the center will provide an area for GLBT students.

“The community has existed for some time now at [Appalachian], minority groups need a safe haven, and now GLBT students will have a place,” she said.

There are events planned to mark the opening of the center.

“We have a ribbon cutting ceremony planned, with speeches from [Chancellor] Peacock and [alumnus] Chad Wilson,” Washington said. “We’re also planning on having a reception.”

“Chancellor Peacock has been very supportive of our goals,” Assistant Director of Gender Education Suzette L. Patterson said. “He commissioned the task force to ask the faculty, staff and students if a center was needed.”

The events will take place in Summit Trail Solarium of the student union.

Students are excited at the prospects of the center, something they said is a long time coming.

“I’m glad it’s there, it’s really something that’s needed by GLBT students,” senior journalism major Jeffrey C. Page said. “If we already have a women’s center and a multicultural center, it makes sense that we should have an GLBT center.”

The office of Multicultural Student Development, which also coordinates the Queer Film Series, operates the GLBT group.

So when is the Men's Center going to open up? The Heterosexual Center?

And student fees are paying for this - correct? And if you morally object to it, then what - can you get a refund on your fees based on a violation of your freedom of religion and having your dollars support something like this? Chancellor Peacock, this is one two-time alum that is very disappointed in your affirmation of the victimhood lifestyle.
