Whether students are going for a stroll, rushing to class, or going out for a recreational hike, no one can deny the Town of Boone’s terrain is a bit on the mountainous side.
But the landscape doesn’t just affect students’ routes in regards to hurrying to class.
It also affects fashion and foot health.

“Mountain life is
multi-faceted. You need footwear that can get wet, stays on your feet,
and provides traction and slip resistance on a variety of surfaces,”
Director of Marketing for Chacos Brian Scranton said.
Sophomore
geology major Elizabeth G. Goldsmith said she wears Chacos as one of
her main footwear choices because they are “all-terrain shoes.”
“My Chacos don’t fall off my feet when I’m running up steps or racing across campus,” she said.
Chacos are not only designed to withstand all terrains and stay on the
wearer’s feet with it’s adjustable straps, but the shoes promote foot
health as well, Scranton said.
“A
majority of the population over-pronates [which means] rolls their feet
outward. This affects the entire body, from head to toe,” Scranton
said. “It’s a result of poor arch support and a number of other
factors. Chaco footwear has a BioCentric foot bed that controls
pronation and supports every element of your stride.”
Rainbows Sandals are also a favorite among students.
Goldsmith said when she’s not wearing her Chacos, she’s usually wearing her Rainbows.
“They are very comfortable and they mold to your feet and they’re durable,” she said.
Victoria
F. Parnell, a freshman archeology and history major, agrees the arch
support of Rainbows makes it one of her favorite shoes to wear.
“There
are some flip-flops I don’t wear because they aren’t good for walking
from my dorm to Walker [Hall], like my Sperry flip-flops,” Parnell
said. “They have that ridge in them where they’re sewed together and
they rub my feet raw… Rainbows are the most comfortable.”
According
to Rainbow Founder and President Jay R. Longley Jr. on the Rainbows Web
site, the arch support and comfort is attributed to the rubber sponge
made with “memory” in the sandals, which “mold to each individuals
feet.”
Foot care is very important, according to the North Carolina Foot and Ankle Society Web site.
“Shoes
are the most important gear you can own,” Scranton said. “They are the
foundation of every step. Shoes that do not support your natural stride
are basically working against you and limiting your efficiency—the
worst result is a foot or joint injury.”
