Appalachian State University will present its new 10-year master plan today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Table Rock Room of Plemmons Student Union.
The university hired a Davidson, N.C.-based planning firm called The Lawrence Group to oversee the process of drafting an updated master plan.
Town of Boone officials also hired the same firm to oversee the update of their own master plan.
“The town has been
involved in the university’s process and vice-versa, and we’ve sought
input from the campus and town communities in our updates,” Interim
Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Gregory M. Lovins said.
Lovins said universities typically update their campus master plans every 10 years.
“Since
the university approved a new strategic plan in summer 2008, the timing
was right to update the campus master plan, which was last updated in
2000,” he said.
The unveiling of the master plan will involve a PowerPoint presentation, providing an overview of the process and a schedule.
There will be time at the end of the presentations for questions or remarks from students, faculty and staff.
It will also include “a discussion of the major subjects and concepts that we’ve used in the plan,” Lovins said.
Topics
range from the need for student, faculty and staff housing, a
sustainable campus, integrating sustainability with transportation and
parking needs, locations for future campus growth, the need for
additional classroom and office space and the integration of the
university’s master plan with Boone’s land use master plan.
Boone
Town Council member Stephen Phillips said the town and university have
worked together towards the basic principle of smart growth.
He said
there was a strong consensus to arrange for more housing closer to
campus, and provide more alternative transportation options for
students living off campus.
