The Appalachian field hockey team lost a heartbreaking 2-1 match in double overtime to Longwood University Sunday afternoon.

The Mountaineers took on the second-ranked team in the East Division of the Northern Pacific Conference in the Longwood Lancers, who previously beat the Apps in overtime Oct. 10.

The first goal came a little over 10 minutes into the game when Lancers’ defender Christina Verhulst found the goal after being assisted by teammate Amanda Babineau.

“I just tried to do my best all day,” senior goalkeeper Denise Adams said.

Adams made her first start of the season Sunday against Longwood, making an impressive 10 saves before allowing the final goal in the second overtime.

“This was my first start and I think I did a pretty good job today,” she said.

The Lancers controlled the ball for most of the first half, taking eight shots on goal and scoring once. The first half ended with a Lancers’ 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers came out in the second half and began working the field aggressively and controlling the ball.

Sixteen minutes into the second half the Apps evened the score with a goal by senior Kate Garnet.

“The goal was a result of our team working the field,” said Garnet. “We were very intense in the second half and it was definitely a team effort.”

Her goal was assisted via a cross pass by teammate Lisa Charney.

Good defense by the Apps kept the Lancers scoreless in the second half, and when time expired in regulation play the score remained 1-1.

The first 15 minute overtime period saw the Mountaineers take six shots on goal to Longwood’s three. However, none of the shots were successful as Lancer goalkeeper Erin Bollinger made three of her eight saves on the day.

Longwood junior Andrea Bastiaanse scored an unassisted goal 35 seconds into the second overtime period to end the game.

After the loss, Appalachian senior field hockey standout Jessie Harris reminisced on her career at ASU.

“It’s been really awesome playing at Appalachian,” Harris said. “I’m from Colorado so App has really become my home away from home.”

When asked about the disappointing loss she said, “I think today is the hardest I’ve ever seen our team play, I’m proud of everyone.”

Though this is the final game of the regular season, the Apps are preparing to take on No. 1 ranked Stanford in the first round of the NorPac Conference Tournament Thursday.

The NorPac tournament will be held at Stanford University with four interdivisional games starting Nov. 5.
