Loretta Clawson has been re-elected mayor of the Town of Boone, bringing months of campaigning to a close.
Clawson beat out candidates John J. Mena and Tim Wilson with 787 votes, or 52.29 percent of the total vote.
Mena received 237 votes, or 15.75 percent and Wilson received 474 votes, or 31.50 percent.
“I’m just absolutely thrilled,” Clawson said. “I appreciate the student vote and them being so interested.”
Clawson attributed her win to hard work and early voting, which she said she did best on.
“I’m
glad this year [the opponents’ campaign] didn’t have the kind of
negativity it did two years ago,” she said. “The candidates all ran
very respectable campaigns.”
Now that
she has been re-elected mayor, Clawson wants to continue to work on
things such as the Boone Master Plan, town parks and other things to be
added in the future.
Mena, who owns Haircut 101, said he wished he had run a more aggressive campaign and increased visibility.
“I threw
my hat into the ring because I didn’t think the real issues were being
addressed,” Mena said. “I could have done more campaign-wise, but I was
trying to run a business too. I hope things work out for the positive
for Boone and for ASU.”
